News Update: Fox, CW Get an Early Start on Fall Premieres

Michael Cassidy Mixing the charm of "Gilmore Girls" with some of the glitz of "Gossip Girl," "Privileged" is the delightful surprise of the season. JoAnna Garcia ("Reba") stars as Megan, a Yale graduate and aspiring writer whose life takes a wild turn when she's hired to tutor spoiled twins Rose and Sage Baker (Lucy Kate Hale and Ashley Newbrough) by their grandmother (Anne Archer).

The setting (ritzy Palm Beach, Fla.) is glamorous; the characters are potentially rich, and the complications are abundant, as are poignant moments and wacky humor (wait till you meet Allan Louis as the private chef). Moms who are embarrassed to watch some other CW shows with their daughters should embrace "Privileged."

News Update: Pilot Watch: Privileged

Ashley Newbrough as Sage The networks have announced their Fall schedules, but which of the series will actually be worth watching? This Summer, as the networks release their pilots, I'll be posting my first impressions. A lot can change before a show makes it to air — especially this year, when the writers' strike severely gummed up the production of pilots — so consider these just some quick thoughts on how the shows look now. Today's installment: Privileged, a CW dramedy that will air after 90210 on Tuesdays.

What's it about? Based on the book How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls (which was also the show's original title), Privileged is the story of Megan Smith, a Yale grad who ends up personal tutor to spoiled Palm Beach heiresses Rose and Sage.

Who's in it? Joanna Garcia, Lucy Hale (who is not Nora Zehetner), Ashley Newbrough, Anne Archer, Michael Cassidy

The good: Garcia is wonderful in the lead role, a little reminiscent of Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada as she bumbles her way through various situations; she gets all of the most clever lines. Likewise, Newbrough is strong as the controlling, backstabbing Sage, and Hale turns on the sweetness to play the more delicate Rose. In fact, "sweet" is a good word for the show overall: It's very feel-good. Even the drama seems low-stakes, without the scandal of a Gossip Girl episode.

The bad: I didn't come to Privileged looking for an outstanding plot, but even at that, there were some baffling elements. The show hints that Megan has a past in Palm Beach — so why is she so surprised at the mansions and the money? And why would someone as smart as Megan supposedly is take a job as a tutor without even meeting the kids she's supposed to teach? I also can't believe this is a 9 p.m. show; it's not as family friendly as 7th Heaven or anything, but it still seems like it would appeal to a younger audience than 90210 will.

Will I watch? I'll probably check out a couple of episodes to see how the story progresses and then decide whether it's on my schedule for good.

News Update: 'The Hills' Star Gets 'Privileged'

Lauren Conrad to guest on Privileged It seems that Lauren Conrad’s career is on a roll, with fashion design gigs, guest appearances and of course, her successful reality series, The Hills. We recently reported that the 22-year-old reality TV star and fashion designer will be appearing as herself in the teen dramedy, Greek, in which she will be playing herself. Now, Hollyscoop is reporting that Lauren Conrad has landed another guest stint on an upcoming teen series.

LC, as she is famously being referred to, will be appearing on an episode of the upcoming CW series, Privileged, which stars Joanna Garcia, Lucy Hale and Ashley Newbrough.

The series revolves around Yale graduate and aspiring journalist Megan Smith (Joanna Garcia) as she gets fired from her tabloid job and later meets cosmetics mogul Laurel Limoges, who then hires Megan to be her granddaughter’s live-in tutor. Megan is then forced to deal with heiresses Rose (Lucy Hale) and Sage Baker (Ashley Newbrough), who do not immediately get along with Megan.

Lauren Conrad will be appearing in the October 7 episode of Privileged, where she will be playing herself. In fact, she is supposedly attending a party hosted by Rose and Sage, which will later go out of hand.

Despite her growing number of TV series appearances, the 22-year-old says that she isn’t much of an actress. In a conversation with Ryan Seacrest, she said, “I'm not good at acting — I'm not going to pretend to be.”

Catch Lauren Conrad as she pops into our television screens on The Hills, with guest appearances on Greek and Privileged.

News Update: "Privileged" Is "Gossip Girl" with More Bikinis

Lucy Kate Hale as Rose Jaunted is planning our fall travel with some help from the networks. Check out our Fall TV 2008 Map to go where your new favorite characters go.

What if the Gossip Girls were shipped to sunny Florida? That's the rough premise behind the CW's new series "Privileged" (Sept. 9, 9 pm), starring Joanna Garcia (left) as an Ivy League-educated tutor to two filthy rich and spoiled orphans (Ashley Newbrough and Lucy Hale of last year's "Bionic Woman" remake).

The series, based on the Zoey Dean novel How To Teach Filthy Rich Girls, is set in Florida, where the girls' grandmother (Anne Archer, Michael Douglas' wife in "Fatal Attraction") is raising them. But it's shot in SoCal, which is how "Hills" star Lauren Conrad was able to film a guest spot earlier this week.

News Update: 'Privileged' Actress Lands an Engagement and a TV Movie

JoAnna Garcia as Megan Twenty-nine year old Joanna Garcia from the hit CW sitcom, Reba, has got things going great recently with her upcoming new CW series right around the corner. This fall, Garcia comes back to television screens with Privileged, where she plays a smart Yale graduate who is set to teach some academic and life lessons to two spoiled, rich girls, played by Lucy Hale and Ashley Newbrough. The series will debut on September 9 at 9pm on the CW.

Moreover, Garcia is also busy working on her new TV movie, which is set to be released later this year.

Joanna Garcia is currently in the process of completing work on the upcoming Lifetime television film entitled A Very Merry Daughter of the Bride, where she plays Roxanne. The film, which is set to be released in December, revolves around a wedding planner who despises her widowed mother’s love affairs. In fact, she spends her entire Christmas season convincing her mother that marriage is the last thing her mother needs. However, when she finds a little romance herself, she decides to change her mind about things.

Recently, it was also announced that Luke Perry is also coming on board the production. A Very Merry Daughter of the Bride also stars Canadian actress Helen Shaver of The 4400 and The L Word, and Kenneth Welsh, who recently appeared on Stargate Atlantis and Bionic Woman.

In other news, Joanna Garcia recently announced through her representative that she is engaged to Justin Timberlake’s best friend and business partner, Trace Ayala. Ayala, 27, and Garcia have been dating for two years.

"For us, it is very important that both people have their own thing going on and that there is a lot of time for yourself," Ayala told Us Magazine in June.

Additionally, Garcia says that Ayala “is the most romantic guy on the planet. I will come home and there will be a bouquet of flowers, and he'll force me to eat this fantastic bowl of pasta. It is so wonderful.”

Catch Joanna Garcia as she returns to television screens on September 9 at 9pm in the CW’s Privileged.

News Update: Lucy Hale Talks About Her 'Privileged' Role

Lucy Kate Hale as Rose CW has successfully pulled off creating teen dramedies that get under the viewers' skin, thus enabling the show to survive for a couple or more seasons. Take One Tree Hill or Gossip Girl, two of the most popular teen shows of its time. Now, the CW is investing in yet another show that will definitely bring in the laughter and drama, and not to mention, the bling. Privileged, which debuts on the CW in September 9, is no Gossip Girl rip-off.

In fact, Comic-Con audiences see it as a cross between Gilmore Girls and Gossip Girl. Oddly enough, it might be a mixture of both shows. The show, which will air every Tuesday at 9pm, stars Lucy Kate Hale and Ashley Newbrough as the filthy rich kids under the tutelage of Megan Smith, played by Joanna Garcia.

Recently, Lucy Kate Hale wrote her thoughts about the show on her official website. Hale, who also recently appeared in Bionic Woman as Jaime Sommer’s younger sister Becca, describes her Privileged character, Rose Baker, as “a bubbly, charismatic girl who wants to venture out into the world.” She adds that Rose is the “nicer twin” among the two girls.

The 19-year-old actress says that she thoroughly enjoyed filming the pilot episode and working with actress Joanna Garcia, who recently appeared in Welcome to the Captain.

"One of my favorite scenes in the pilot is the 'tasing scene,' when Megan is first introduced to Rose and Sage," Hale wrote in her official website. "She opens their bedroom door and the twins' first instinct is to sit up and tase her because they aren't used to anyone coming into their room before noon. It's really funny."

It seems that this new show promises a sprinkle of comedy on top of Megan's (Joanna Garcia) struggles for acceptance by the Baker twins. However, the struggle not only lies in the storyline, but behind the scenes as well.

Hale admits that "The biggest challenge in shooting the pilot would have to be creating the bond between Ashley [Newbrough] and me. We play twins, and they have such a unique and strong relationship. It was a bit difficult to convey this with someone you just met, but luckily Ashley and I hit it off! We have good chemistry and I think that will be evident in the show."

Don’t forget to catch Privileged as it debuts on the CW on September 9 at 9pm.
